Optimum Attributes for Fudge

Despite the infinite flexibility and adaptability of Fudge, or perhaps because of it, it is sometimes desirable to have a few basic attributes into which all the others can be boiled down for purposes of comparison, application, or even to dispense with the hassle of trying to decide which attributes to give one's character given the vast number available. To serve those ends these attributes are offered, although in the irresistable spirit of Fudge, there are two optional sets of attributes rather than one.

Basic Attributes Quartet

The first set consists of Mind, Body, Spirit, and Reflexes. These four attributes ought to be able to handle any essential human endeavor not requiring study or training. These are the most basic capabilities found in human nature.

Mind represents intellect, perspicacity, and general mental capacity. It is the thinking aspect of one's nature.

Body represents strength, stamina, and general physical capacity. It is the doing aspect of one's nature.

Spirit represents willpower, intuition, and general spiritual capacity. It is the feeling aspect of one's nature.

Reflexes represent agility, dexterity, and general motor capacity. It is the reacting aspect of one's nature.

In terms of Scale, the Mass and Strength Scales are related to Body and the Speed Scale is related to Reflexes.

Sensory rolls are made against Mind if they are cognitive or Spirit if they are intuitive.

Wound levels are based on species and genre specifications, but more or fewer may be taken as gifts or faults. Alternatively (or additionally), the GM can add or deduct wound levels based on high or low Body ratings. For example, for every positive level of Body, one Scratch wound level should be added, and for every negative level of Body, one Scratch wound level should be subtracted. Temporary decreases in attributes do not affect the number of wound levels a character possesses.

Sanity levels, if used, could be treated similarly, but based on Mind.

Soul levels would be based on Spirit.
