There is much to explore on that page, and I am grateful for the work it must have involved.

In related news, I have updated the Game Support links page at Fudgery.net. Several sites have been added (including the aforementioned SWAT HQ site), several deceased sites have been removed, and I reorganized the links by category, such as Automotive Combat.

Being a fan of movies such as Mad Max and Mad Max 2 (also known as The Road Warrior) as well as a gamer, I have an endless fascination with games of that genre. Car Wars (especially the 5th edition), Axles & Alloys, OverDrive Arena, Q Cars, and Atomic Highway are all in my collection. Now there is another entry in the world of post-apocalyptic automotive combat: Outrider by DiceFestGames (available here at RPGNow). I look forward to giving it a try and reporting my findings in Fudgerylog. My ultimate plan is to set aside a day to play most or all of the games mentioned above and do a detailed analysis of their relative strengths and weaknesses.

The product description states, “You can play a game of War Rocket with fleets of 10-20 ships in less than 90 minutes with minimal use of tokens and absolutely no paper record keeping!” No paper record keeping? Fascinating.

The miniatures are beautiful, and if the rules deliver their promise of “fast-paced miniature space combat,” War Rocket may become one of my favorite miniature war games.

I neglected to mention this earlier, but I finally purchased Field of Glory and subsequently ordered and purchased two expansions, Rise of Rome: Republican Rome at War and Legions Triumphant: Imperial Rome at War. And so another addiction is added to my maladies, or rather two addictions: Field of Glory expansion books and historical miniatures. The former is the new addiction, the latter is one that was lying dormant. The problem with satisfying the latter (other than the cost) is the limited availability of historical miniatures, at least in my locale. I realize ordering is the solution, but it’s also a more expensive solution when shipping costs are considered. It will be a long time before I can afford to field armies of pewter miniatures, and I do not want to wait that long before playing, but I might be able to buy some plastic historical miniatures for less. I believe Airfix made a number of 15 mm plastic armies that will suffice in the meantime. As for the availability of those, I’ll have to look into it.

N.B. I was just made aware of a special Field of Glory Web site apart from the Osprey Publishing site: www.fieldofglory.com.

I have neglected to mention this here before, but one of my projects is a modern-ish miniature war game utilizing plastic soldiers and Fudge. Yes, those plastic soldiers. (Perhaps my favorite of all console games is Army Men 3D, which is fully half the inspiration for this project — the other half being the plastic soldiers themselves and my memory of playing with them as a young lad.) Fudge, I realize, is not combat rules-heavy, but I think it is flexible enough and powerful enough to support a fast-paced and tactically interesting war game (or skirmish game, to be more precise). Details will follow.

Have you ever noticed that board games come with one rule book, but they are typically designed for two to four players? Why? They come with more than one token — one for each player. Why not include more than one rule book — how about one for each player?

What would be served by including more rule books, you might ask, except for increasing the cost of the game? Apart from the fact that in most board games the cost of the rulebook is negligible (the infamous exceptions being games such as Advanced Squad Leader or Star Fleet Battles), the obvious benefit is that everyone can learn to play at the same time, rather than waiting for one person to learn the rules and teach it to everyone else. This is especially helpful if there is more than one rule book aficionado in the group. The other benefit is that everyone can look up rules at the same time when a question arises during play. Yet another benefit is that players are free to consult the rules without drawing attention to the fact, thereby answering their own questions without tipping their hand (a factor not to be underestimated in serious strategy games).

It is true there are game companies that routinely provide free PDF versions of their rule books online (e.g. Columbia Games), and I applaud them, but there are still many gamers who do not have Internet access or even computers, believe it or not. This significant fact ought not to be ignored by publishers of board games and war games. These customers, after all, are not being lured away by the computer game industry and they deserve to be catered to, not dismissed. Most rule books are a few pages of black & white print. Just throw a few more in the box! Your customers will be happier, and happy customers are loyal customers.

Additionally, many players are content to let someone else teach them the rules, usually the person who bought the game. If it were made easier for all the players to read the rules by providing more copies, then casual players may come to feel less intimidated by rule books and become buyers of games themselves. This, of course, helps both the hobby and the industry. I am calling upon all publishers of games to create a new standard: one rule book for each player in every boxed game. That’s all I ask.

Somehow, I missed the arrival of Field of Glory, the ancient & medieval war game by Osprey Publishing, despite having reported its imminent release.

I discovered it quite by accident on a shelf at work, and although it is too early to write a review (having neither read nor played it yet), I will say that at first glance I am impressed by its organization, layout, illustrations, quality of binding, quality of paper, and clarity of writing. It is a handsome, well-constructed volume, but not ponderous in size or content. It seems to be an ideal manual in every way and worth the price if the rules prove their mettle. I hope to report further on the matter in the future.
