The Lost Minis Wiki is an “open resource for identifying and cataloguing fantasy miniatures.” This is an excellent resource for collectors and admirers of miniature sculpture, but it could also be used as a practical resource for fantasy role-playing. Consider, if you will, a situation in which a GM is attempting to describe a monster or even a non-player character. A verbal description may or may not be enough, but if an illustration is unavailable, it will have to suffice unless there is or was a miniature created of the being in question. You needn’t own the miniature itself. All you need to do is print the image or, if you use a laptop computer at your gaming table, save the image or bookmark the page and display it during the encounter. It can also be used by players who like to inform others that “my character looks like this” when the actual miniature is lacking.

I learned of this site upon reading this entry of Jeff’s Gameblog.

The Lost Minis Wiki has been added to the Game Reference links page at Fudgery.net.

In 1986, I had the misfortune of being completely unaware that the most realistic post-apocalyptic role-playing game parody ever created had been published. Otherwise, I would have purchased it instead of having to resort to waiting years for my eBay saved search to bear results, only to have it snatched from my grasp by bidders with more money than sense when it finally came up for auction. The game of which I write is, of course, Creeks and Crawdads by Martin Costa.

Fortunately, there is a substitute thanks to post-apocalyptic reconstructionist Alexander Cherry. His version of Creeks and Crawdads utilizes something called the Impact System, and the whole project is described by him here. Not only that, this reanimated mockery of life as we will not get a chance to know it is available as a free PDF, which is a very considerate thing for someone to do for total strangers. So if, like me, you have an odd urge to get a glimpse of a future in which inept crustaceans rule the world or, more accurately, struggle for survival in the ashes of our civilization, then this is the game for you!

One of the games I have always found visually intriguing is Talislanta, the unconventional fantasy role-playing game written by Stephan Michael Sechi and illustrated by P.D. Breeding-Black (and others after the first edition). It is a game steeped in the alien and the exotic, and as such it has a richly detailed background, lending itself to comparisons to Empire of the Petal Throne or Skyrealms of Jorune. Talislanta has appeared in five different editions not including the d20 edition, and although there are no new editions on the horizon, the good news is that all of the official books are available as free PDFs that may be downloaded at Talislanta.com. This site is an excellent resource not only for official material, but for links to fan-created material as well. Adding to all of this utility, it is also a Web log.

Darlene (formerly known as Darlene Pekul) is and always has been one of my favorite role-playing game artists and cartographers. Her work is truly iconic, having graced not only the pages of The Dragon and the original Dungeon Master’s Guide, but also the very emblem of TSR itself, the wizard’s face logo. Darlene also created the most famous (and I’d not be alone to say greatest) campaign maps in the history of the hobby, those of The World of Greyhawk.

I am a proud owner of a copy of her landmark fantasy card game, Jasmine: The Battle for the Mid-Realm, which I purchased from her at the first Gen Con I ever attended. (When I say, “purchased from her,” I really mean to say that I gave the money to my mother and watched as she purchased it for me, because I was an awkward lad of about 12 or 13 who was much too shy to approach the beautiful artist I so deeply admired. Aye, silly, but true. Such are the tales of adolescence.)

James Maliszewski had the enviable pleasure of interviewing Darlene in Grognardia, and Darlene herself has her own Web site, the aptly named Darlene the Artist.

Darlene, I wish you the best.
