On page 10 of issue 66 of Dragon Magazine (October 1982), I noticed this item in the Convention Schedule:

AUTUMN REVEL, Nov. 6-7 —The staff of TSR Hobbies, Inc.,
will get together with gamers for another of TSR’s mini-
conventions at the American Legion Hall, 735 Henry St., Lake
Geneva, Wis. A diverse schedule of gaming events will be of-
fered, along with the traditional auction, and refreshments will
be available on the premises. Doors will be open from 9 a.m. to
midnight on Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Admission is $5 for the weekend or $3 for one day, and all game
events are free of charge. For details, write to Autumn Revel,
c/o TSR Hobbies, P.O. Box 756, Lake Geneva WI 53147.

This would have been close to heaven for me, or more likely Valhalla. Ah, to have grown up in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin! I suppose Gary Con (which I have not yet attended) would be the closest experience to what Autumn Revel was like, but gaming in the early 1980s, for lads of my age, had a certain electricity about it. The hobby was widespread and still growing, and for many of us Lake Geneva was the center of the universe. Now, where is my time machine?

A Day of Fudge

A “Day of Fudge” is being organized around the world to introduce gamers to the joy of role-playing using Fudge, a role-playing game with an easily learned system of rules that can be adapted to any genre or setting. The event is scheduled for 6 June 2009 in game shops, libraries, cafés, and other public locales. The Day of Fudge is the brainchild of Patrick Benson, who encourages anyone interested in organizing their own local Day of Fudge to join the Fudge Community Yahoo! Group, the event’s “Mission Control.”

The official publisher of Fudge is Grey Ghost Press, Inc.. The Fudge 1995 Edition is available for free in several electronic formats from various sources (including Grey Ghost). Grey Ghost also publishes the current hardcover version, the Fudge 10th Anniversary Edition (q.v.).

Origins 2009 Early Bird Registration

The deadline for Early Bird registration for the Origins Game Fair (24-28 June 2009 in Columbus, Ohio) is Sunday, 11 January 2009, i.e. tomorrow. The Early Bird plan consists of a full 5-day show badge for only $50, which is a savings of $20.

General Gaming Resolutions for 2009

‘Tis the end of 2008 and I have not kept a single resolution I made (q.v.), but I am choosing to think of this as a postponement rather than a failure, as all good procrastinators do. Therefore, I am repeating my resolutions of the previous year, with a slight modification. I am replacing the resolution to start a weekly board game club in Toledo with a resolution to write at least twice as many Fudgerylog articles in 2009 as I did in 2008. If I happen to get involved in a weekly board game club, so much the better, but it is no longer an “official” resolution.

This year I have been lax in most of my creative ventures, gaming-related and otherwise, but I am resolved to be more active and contribute more time and effort to my chosen hobby communities.

War of 1812 Battlefield to Become War Zone, Figuratively Speaking

The World at War: Miniature War Gaming Day will be held again at Fort Meigs on 1 November 2008, co-sponsored by the Historical Miniatures Gaming Society Great Lakes Chapter:

Fort Meigs 2008 Event Schedule

Alas, I shall probably miss this event for the second year in a row because I am scheduled to work that day. We shall see. Meanwhile, I’ll try to do a better job of reporting these events sufficiently in advance.

Origins 2008 Early April Update

Origins update: I missed the deadline for submitting events. I also probably missed the chance to make reservations at an affordable hotel near the convention center, although it doesn’t matter as much since I won’t be running any events (except, perhaps, for some impromptu open games). Oh, well. At least now it won’t be necessary to commit myself to particular days except and unless I register to play specific games. Perhaps it is best to test the waters of public gaming as a player before I plunge back into the icy depths of running events. Aye, that’s the positive way to look at it.

P.S. I’d like to abolish March as a month. It has failed to justify its existence to me.

Going to Origins 2008

The decision has been made: I just registered for the Early Bird Full Show Pass for the Origins Game Fair (to be held 25-29 July) and registered a friend in the free Expose-a-Friend program (which is also a Full Show Pass… for free!). I am now committed to attend, and I will be running some events of the Fudge role-playing variety. Details will follow.

Reminder: The last day for Early Bird Registration ($50 for five days) is January the 10th.
