Gamer Colloquialisms

Related to the previous article, I just remembered an example of a gamer colloquialism not used by anyone in my own gaming group. I heard it in the 1980s when I was attending NOWSCon, a small gaming convention held by the Northern Ohio Wargaming Society. I was playing in the first round of an RPGA-sanctioned [...]

GMing Terms Added to Glossary

I have added three terms to the Glossary of Fudge and General Role-Playing Terms: “GM fiat,” “GM on the fly,” and “GM whim.”
I have also pondered whether it would be justifiable to include what may be considered gamer colloquialisms, but ultimately I think it would clutter the glossary, the aim of which is to be [...]

Random Generator Blues

I never made an announcement at the time, but there are two developments concerning the random generators at Fudgery.net.
The first is that I have taken The Random Concept Generator offline due to unsatisfactory results. Maybe it’s too big. Maybe I need to adjust the syntax. It just feels too clumsy now, and I’d rather do [...]

Belated Update at Fudgery.net

I have made the minor alteration of adding alphabetical hyperlinks to the List of Attributes by Game. The list has been up since 2004, so I can’t justify why it has taken me so long. ‘Twas an oversight complicated by procrastination.

Happy Burns Night

Another gaming inspiration I forgot to mention in the previous article is the notion of drawing room horror/science fiction crossovers, of which at least one example was set in Scotland, namely the notorious Devil Girl from Mars (1954). Scoff if you like, but it’s an entertaining movie that could also serve as a good template [...]

To Robert Burns, a Fellow Gamer in Spirit

Burns Night is fast approaching, and for those admirers of the Scottish bard who have the luck to attend a proper Burns supper in his honor and who also happen to be gamers, I thought it would be a good idea to suggest an addition to the annual tradition in the form of a game [...]

Campaign Mastery Web Log

I would like to direct the attention of my readers to a Web log newly added to Fudgerylog’s Links, CampaignMastery.com. It is the official Web log of that most excellent newsletter, RoleplayingTips.com. Primarily aimed at GMs, CampaignMastery.com has several contributing authors offering their views on a wide variety of role-playing subjects from the practical to [...]

Optimum Attributes

I have made a few changes to Optimum Attributes for Fudge. Mind is now divided into Intellect and Willpower instead of Intellect and Perspicacity, and Spirit is now divided into Creativity and Intuition instead of Willpower and Intuition. Perspicacity is redundant and Willpower is really more of a function of the Mind than the Spirit. [...]

Glossary Updated

I’m not sure why it has taken me so long, but I finally updated the Glossary of Fudge and General Role-Playing Terms to include the variant of “Game Master” used in the rest of the English-speaking world: “Games Master.” I also remembered to add “gamer” and “grognard.” Not exactly earth-shattering, but an update is an [...]

Plain Traits for Fudge

Plain Traits for Fudge is the first article I have “officially” posted in the Experimental Fudge section of Fudgery.net. It isn’t anything revolutionary (some of the ideas were or might have been discussed on the FudgeList or elsewhere over the years), but I think the presentation is fairly streamlined. I wrote it in 2007 at [...]
